From Trike to Bike
May 9, 2011. This is a day I imagined...the day my little boy rode a bicycle for the very first time. Having out grown his tricycle and demonstrated both the interest and ability to ride a bicycle in physical therapy, the time had come for Lincoln to have his very first bicycle. I searched on Craig's List and found a Novera bike (from REI) that was well-cared for, reasonably priced, and just Lincoln's size. The whole family drove over to the adjoining neighborhood to buy the bike. Lincoln was a little shy and chose to stand at a distance while we completed the transaction, but when the original bike owner asked him what he thought of his new bike, Lincoln beamed and said, "I like it." Turns out that not only is the bike the right size and in great shape, it is adorned with several "bees", which just so happen to be high on Lincoln's list of favorites these days. When we got home, after a quick seat adjustment, Lincoln hopped on and rode carefully down the driveway, into the cul de sac, and made a complete lap. He had a few hiccups with the backward brakes and it will take a little time for him to gain speed, but by the end of the summer, I have no doubts that he will be riding fast enough to make me nervous.
